It also reduces the brightness of the image.įocus stacking allows you to increase the depth of field of images taken at the sharpest aperture. If a small object fills the frame, it’s often so close that its entire depth cannot be in focus at once.ĭepth of field is normally increased by stopping down in aperture (using a larger f-stop number), but beyond a certain point, lens diffraction will counteract the benefit of the image being focus. And depth of field is smaller (shallower) for objects closer to the camera. We tend to shoot with the camera relatively close to our subject. Getting sufficient depth of field can be particularly challenging in food and still life photography. Notice also that the background isn’t as blurred out, due to the increase in the depth of field.Īs you can see, stopping down in aperture provided a bit more focus, but it degraded the quality of the image. The image isn’t sharp and it looks a bit grainy. Now compare this image of the same shot at f22. Note that not all the petals are in focus. At f5.6, you can see that the image quality is good and that the image has a smooth and refined look. Here is an image of some pink fabric flowers that I shot with my Canon 100mm macro lens. As you stop down, the fine details in your image will begin to blur out. It doesn’t matter how good your lens is, your images will grow less sharp at apertures over f16 due to a law of physics. This causes the light to hit the subject less precisely and the image will be a bit muddy and less sharp. When you stop down to apertures such as f22, the light hits and bounces off the edge of the aperture blade. When the aperture is wide (lower f-stop number), say anywhere from f1.4 to f8, there is a lot of light hitting the camera sensor directly. ![]() For example when we see light hit water droplets, or a spider web.ĭiffraction also occurs in our lens and on our camera sensor. We see diffraction all the time in our daily life. Basically, diffraction occurs when light interacts with an object. Lens diffraction is a phenomenon of optical physics. ![]() So, I felt I had the best of both worlds, the cutting-edge creativity of the art students, and the more restrained techniques of the set-up at the Yoshida studio. Although my Japanese language was pretty poor at the time, as soon asI saw the Yoshida family printer demonstrate, it all started to make sense - this visual language of the artist. ![]() Through this chance meeting, I enrolled in classes at the Yoshida Hanga (printing) Academy every Saturday. I met his son Toshi, then in his late 60s, and his son Tsukasa and wife Kiyoko. Just by chance, I went to see a retrospective exhibition by the late Hiroshi Yoshida, which was very inspiring. ![]() The students in my department were using woodblock in a looser manner, whereas I was interested in starting off with the traditional techniques. My introduction to Japan was at Language University in Osaka, where I spent 6 months trying to get to grips with the language. Then, I moved to Tokyo where I did my Masters Degree over 2 years at Tama Art University. You studied this technique whilst living in Japan, can you tell us a bit about that experience? Following on from the latter tradition, artists in Japan and around the world today use woodblock in a range of creative ways, from pure woodblock to one element in a finished multi-media print, or a touch of woodblock in a painting. It had somewhat of a resurgence in 1910, when two new woodblock groups were formed: Shin hanga (new prints), inspired by traditional ukiyo-e wooodblock prints and the continuation of the collaborative relationship of artist, publisher, carver and printer and Sosaku hanga (creative prints), where artists looked more to the world beyond for inspiration, and went through the full process of designing, carving and printing the block. The art of woodblock printing almost died a death with the introduction of new techniques like lithography and photography in the years after Japan opened up to the West from the end of the Edo period in 1868. However, the full-colour technique used in this era was often to make exact copies of paintings, not unique images in their own right. The introduction of the kento, the registration marks, allowed the carver to create multiple blocks which the printer would use in sequence to create exquisite, excellently registered prints for the publisher to offer for sale. The publisher would often commission the artist, whose brush-drawn drawings were pasted face-down onto the block. In the 1700s and 1800s, there was a sophisticated collaboration between publisher, artist, carver and printer. It would be many hundreds of years before full-coloured printing would be developed. Buddhist temples were where most of the early black and white prints were made - mostly religious images and texts, but also texts on farming and medicine. The basic techniques for Japanese woodblock printing originated in China, and spread from there through Korea and eventually into Japan around the 8th century. These classes help stimulate and inspire our UCSC undergraduate art major students to prepare their artistic careers and expand their possibilities for study opportunities internationally. As part of our ongoing series the A-Z of Print Studio, we're delighted to bring you J for Japanese Woodblock Printing! We caught up with tutor Campbell Sandilands about this ancient artform, his time learning the art and what you should expect from our Japanese Woodblock course.įirst up, could you give us a quick overview of Japanese Woodblock Printing? ![]() Through various class activities, excursions, and cultural visits students were exposed to diverse and multi-regional art practices that broadened their perspectives and increased their understanding not only in the field of print media but in the larger contemporary visual culture. Classes included field trips to local museums and galleries, hands-on workshops at a traditional paper mill (washi) in Tokyo, and interactions with local visiting artists, master printmakers and other Japanese students. This method deeply influenced some late 19th-century Post-Impressionist artists, such as Van Gogh, Toulouse Lautrec, Edgar Degas and Edouard Manet.Īt Tokyo National University of the Arts, students studied the treasured historical skills and tools of Moku Hanga with greater understanding and appreciation. While in the Western tradition, oil-based ink is applied with a roller and printed onto the papers surface, often with the help of a press, in the Japanese tradition water-based ink is applied with a brush and, while being printed by hand, is pressed deeply into the absorbent Japanese paper. In Summer 2018 Professor Jimin Lee took a group of UCSC Art students to Japan to learn Japanese woodblock printmaking “Moku Hanga” known as the “Ukiyo-e technique” widely studied by artists today. ![]() I wonder if claiming there is no SART game is very intentional wording or not, especially since the "Transformed" moniker was only added for the sequel. The wording is suspicious, as the leaked presentation never referred to the kart racing game as Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed specifically, just a new kart racing title which people assumed would be in the same series. It is widely considered a rival to the Mario Kart series in terms of quality, with many fans preferring it to Nintendo's racing juggernaut. This racer will also feature 14 wisps (in-game items), options to customize your characters and cars with both cosmetics and performance-enhancing upgrades. While it's often marketed together, it has nothing to do with the resolution and actually refers to the colors and luminance. HDR, which stands for High Dynamic Range, started to become more popular around the same time as 4k TVs. This doesn't mean that 4k is inherently worse for watching 1080p content since most TVs don't have this problem, but it's important to make sure the model you're buying doesn't have any issue with this before going through with the purchase. There are some 4k TVs that have trouble upscaling 1080p, but it's rare. ![]() There isn’t any more detail in the upscaled picture than you can see in the native 1080p picture, so whether or not it looks better is entirely subjective. Overall, the two images look very similar. ![]() Above you can see the difference between a 1080p resolution on the 4k Hisense and on the 1080p TCL. However, it doesn't increase the detail of the image since the signal has the same amount of information. This process increases the pixel count of a lower-resolution image, allowing a picture meant for a screen with fewer pixels to fit a screen with many more. Native 4k content is very popular, especially on streaming apps, but some of what you watch may still be lower-resolution content upscaled to UHD, which will look different from native 4k. To present lower-resolution material on a 4k TV, the TV has to perform a process called upscaling. If you have limited space and need a small TV, you'll likely need to get a 1080p model, since 4k TVs are usually available in larger sizes. It's becoming harder to find 1080p TVs in the 2020s, and they're usually limited to small, entry-level models. The original Xbox One and PS4 were limited to 1080p, and then the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X/S, followed by the PS5 and Xbox Series X, were each released with 4k support. Regular Blu-ray discs are 1080p, and there are now 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray discs as well, but it's an entirely new format and requires you to upgrade your Blu-ray player and purchase new 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. Physical video sources, like Blu-ray players and gaming consoles, are starting to support a 4k resolution as well, but they were limited to 1080p for a long time. ResolutionĪs 4k TVs are the norm, native 4k content is also easy to find on most streaming apps like Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video. You can see some of the differences between 4k and 1080p below. A higher resolution simply means it supports more content and delivers crispier images. There are different marketing names for each, but having a 4k TV doesn't necessarily mean it's better than a 1080p there are many different factors that affect the picture quality. ![]() However, this means that overall, a 4k TV also has four times the total amount of pixels as a 1080p TV, which you can see in the table below. So while the name makes it sound like a 4k display has four times the amount of vertical pixels, in actuality, the amount of vertical and horizontal pixels on a 4k display are each double that of a 1080p display. It can get confusing because 1080p refers to the number of vertical pixels (1080), but 4k refers to the number of horizontal pixels (3840). ![]() A 1080p TV has 1920 horizontal pixels and 1080 vertical pixels, while a 4k TV has 3840 horizontal pixels and 2160 vertical. 4k and 1080p refer to the resolution of the display. |
